Green Flag

A Message from the Green Schools Committee in Scoil Mhuire

In Scoil Mhuire, we are currently working onour 7th flag for ‘Global Citizenship and Energy’. This year’s focus is on saving energy. This theme gives our school the opportunity to review our energy use and look at issues surrounding energy use globally.

We hosted a competition and our school motto is ‘Do the Earth a favour, be a power saver!”

We have nominated class monitors for checking water, lights, etc. and we have litter pickers to ensure that our yard is litter free.

At our committee meetings we…

Have two members from 1st-6th class whorotate every year. We discuss all things related to the theme.
Ms. Finneran and Ms. Gray are our co-ordinators.
Host poster competitions and look at surveys.
Visit our outdoor classroom.

Recently we had ‘Clean Air Week’ and a Carpool to School day to save energy. Parents signed ‘No Idling Pledges for Clean Air Week, which are now displayed on our notice board.

We attended Biodiversity workshops for Science Week in the Phoenix Park. Every year we plant seeds in our outdoor classroom. Many classes participated in biodiversity poster competitions.

We hope we can achieve our 7th Green Flag next year!

Our latest event was Switch It Off Day- a Low Energy Day at school. We brought in wooly jumpers, blankets & fluffy socks to keep warm. We didn’t switch on anything we could manage without & we had lots of fun!
